Lesson One: Hurry Up and Slow Down

Object: You will be challenged to remember that “rich people know the speed limit,” to rethink your schedules and “simplify” your lives.

1. Someone read Stephen King’s speech on page 11. Comment on his perspective and answer the question, “What makes you rich?”

2. The most repaired item on an elevator is the Close Door button. Has anyone punched the Close Door button recently? Be honest.

3. Get each one in the group to rate their pace of life: A. In perfect balance. B. Off the charts busy. C. Hey! I’m working on it. D. Slower than molasses. Go ahead and discuss this.

4. Go to page 42 in the book and read the “anonymous friar’s list.” What would you add to it? What particular part popped out at you?

5. Read Philippians 4:6, Matthew 6:25 and 27. Discuss how much of our busy pace of life comes from worry. List some of your worries and talk about them (eg: money, the future, the kids). Read the verses a second time.

6. Read the quote on page 14. Phil believes that, “Those who focus on the fleeting are never satisfied, but those who discover what really lasts find purpose and meaning.”

7. In Chapter 2 (“Speechless in Seattle ”) Phil shares his mission statement. Read it from page 23. How would you end the sentence: “I will consider myself a success when…”?

8. How can living life with purpose and meaning help us balance our schedules?

9. Read Isaiah 26:3-4. Why is leaning on God essential to balancing our lives?
